About Soo Hyung Kim

Soo Hyung Kim is an independent documentary filmmaker and media scholar dedicated to creating social documentaries that elevate the voices of socially marginalized and excluded communities. His work includes powerful narratives about the experiences of North Korean defectors who have crossed the border to settle in South Korea, particularly the identities of their young children and the stories of their longing families remaining in North Korea. Additionally, he has experience producing broadcasts in Korea and the United States, encompassing television documentaries and news programs.

His research focuses on critical theory, digital new media, global media studies, and media production studies. As both a theorist and an artist, he is committed to bridging the gap between theory and praxis, as well as fostering mutual understanding between academia and the industry.

Soo Hyung Kim earned a Ph.D. in Media and Communication from Temple University, as well as a Master of Fine Arts in Social Documentary Film from the School of Visual Arts. Additionally, he holds a master's degree in Journalism and Mass Communication from Korea University, where he also obtained dual bachelor's degrees in Journalism and Mass Communication and Psychology.
